Detail in darker scenes is more visible on the LG where the A80J’s black levels absorb any detail in the foreground and background. It also has a semi-gloss finish with incredible reflection handling, meaning glare won't be an issue in a room with a few lights around, but it's not bright enough to fight intense glare, like if you place the TV opposite a window with direct sunlight. The A80J doesn’t have the brighter OLED Evo panel that LG’s more recent C2 and G2 models have, but as this is a 2021 model, so a more apt comparison would be the non-Evo LG C1 (which I reviewed the 65-inch version).
This ‘somewhere’ is almost always (the obvious exception being LG’s sadly now retired 'Wallpaper' models) a plastic enclosure attached to the rear of the display. While its HDR brightness is only okay, it still delivers an impressive HDR experience thanks to its near-infinite contrast ratio and wide color gamut. Because the other two available models, the 55-inch XR-55A80J and the 77-inch XR-77A80J, share the same core features and underlying technologies, we expect the performance of all three versions to be comparable, and our recommendations for the XR-65A80J may also apply to the other sets.
