About this deal

The Lion: Son of The Forest will be released alongside the exquisite new miniature, available in a special edition fit for the Knight of the Nihilus himself.

Lion subdues the Fallen, named Zabriel, and learns that Zabriel thought that Lion was a traitor to the Imperium and Caliban - as Zabriel saw it, Lion's fleet was the one to open fire on Caliban. The group finds itself in Lion's odd like-Caliban-but-not forest, and eventually emerges on a completely different planet, Avalus.Even the recent Dawn of Fire books are really just "here's stuff happening in the post-Rift galaxy". They go down there to find Markog, who tells Lion that Seraphax wants to speak with him on the planet Sable, then flees.

To continue the fight, Seraphax goes full Chaos, transforming into a demonic form; he has the upper hand until Baelor turns on him, stabbing him in the back - though Seraphax manages to stab him in turn with a corrupted blade before he dies. He's not doing it because there is a genuine strategic value to doing so, he's doing it out of spite. The Pariah Nexus stuff, for instance, and Magnus pulling the Planet of Sorcerers into real space were already mentioned as parallel events. Baelor turns on Seraphax at the last moment, literally stabbing him in the back to stop him from killing the Lion, but is stabbed in turn and expires after getting Lion's forgiveness. The Primarchs were legendary creatures of myth back when I started playing in the days of the second edition and Codex Imperialis , and the notion that one was actually coming back in the present day marked the moment when Warhammer 40,000 lore really took a new step. Besides the villain, who even then wasn't too bad and more so his warband that was mostly alright, there is little to dislike about this novel.

That being said, I’m not sure how good this book is going to be for you if you have not read the Dark Angels part of the Horus Heresy, or indeed a lot of the Horus Heresy in general. According to GW’s announcement, the new book will reveal “exactly what the Primarch of the Dark Angels has been up to since the end of the Horus Heresy”. Examines what it means for the Lion to be the "Knight of Nihilus" while Dante is the Regent of Imperium Nihilus. Also, I think the relationship between the two lead Space Marine antagonists had just that hint of queerness I’ve come to enjoy from Brook’s writing. The perspective in the books shifts between the Lion, a Terran veteran of the Legion and a wonderfully portrayed Chaos Space Marine warband.I'd also strongly recommend The Lion for any 40k fan that craves actual forward momentum in the lore. Calgar is there around halfway through the Dawn of Fire timeline, but not Primaris, while he has crossed the Rubicon fairly recently by Dark Imperium in the revisions. Arks of Omen: The Lion finds him already on his way to aid the Dark Angels , but to find out how he got there, you’ll need to read The Lion: Son of the Forest . After retaking Camarth in full, Lion is dismayed to discover there are no navigators and no astropaths left on the planet, leaving him seemingly trapped here. The Lion has risen from his 10,000-year slumber, and he’s wasting no time putting traitors to the sword.

Members of the warband are still present, holed up in a keep that was once an outpost of a Blood Angels successor chapter.

When I think of all his motifs, I think of the stereotypical Knight Templar, Good Is Not Nice, the fact that a holy knight or paladin's power doesn't come from oaths or morals - it comes from a patron deity. Number Two: Zabriel gets roped into becoming the Lion's right-hand man as the first Fallen to be recruited to the cause. Though the Lion does speculate on it, the exact nature of the forest, and its connection to Caliban, remain a mystery.
