David has a dream at the end of the chapter in which Sophie is being purified/sacrificed like an “Offence” and that his father slits Sophie’s throat with a knife. There are also maids and farm workers and their families who live in their complex of houses, and everyone shares meals together in their big room at the end of the day.

With the help of Sophie, who is now living in the Fringes, they escape the hunters and are rescued by a Sealand expedition.
