Switching over to battery life, the X90 Pro features a 4,870mAh battery, and it utilizes Vivo's 120W wired charging tech along with 50W wireless charging and reverse wireless charging. I haven't tested Vivo's wireless charging system yet, but the 120W FlashCharge tech is a known quantity, and it charges to 50% in under 10 minutes, with a full charge taking just over 25 minutes. Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake in the “production readiness stage” while fans will have to wait longer for Control 2 The circular camera housing is, at least, a little more subtle and premium-looking than that of the X80 Pro and its huge rectangular bump with a smaller circular array of cameras within. That viewing experience is further boosted with support for HDR10+ with a peak brightness of 1300 nits that allows for impressive dynamic range, though it is missing support for Dolby Vision. I don't know when was the last time I used a phone that didn't have a great panel, and that's particularly true for flagships. The X90 Pro comes with a 6.78-inch AMOLED panel with 120Hz refresh, and it has a resolution of 2800 x 1260. While not as high as the 1440p screens you'll find in this category, it is more than adequate, and the panel itself is vibrant and offers stellar color accuracy. The performance score of 1,260,000 on AnTuTu V9.0 is tested in vivo Labs, and the test device is the 12 GB + 256 GB edition of X90 Pro. The score may vary with different editions and test environments and is for reference only. Flip the phone over and you’ll find a single 32MP hole-punch camera centrally embedded within the display. It’s great for selfies and video calls, but I’d leave most of the photography to those impressive rear lenses. It’s much more streamlined than it once was with a largely clean UI and handy tweaks like the ability to shake the phone to enable the torch – a popular stalwart of Motorola’s software – and a handful of Vivo-exclusive widgets for use on the Home screen. It’ll take some getting used to if you’re coming from a different Android skin, but it’s doable and not as painful as it could’ve been.
Last year we crowned the Vivo X80 Pro our favourite phone camera of the year– so it’s fair to say that we’ve been a bit excited for the X90 Pro, which takes things one step further with a whopping great big one-inch camera sensor. Vivo is doing much better with rendering skin tones, and the brand says that it adjusts the tuning to suit the needs of regional markets. Video recording is another area where there's a lot to like; the two 50MP modules can shoot 4K at 60fps (wide-angle is limited to 4K30), and the main lens hits 8K at 24fps. That all essentially means that the Vivo X90 Pro can easily keep up with its Qualcomm-enabled competition, and that’s reflected in everyday performance. The phone feels rapidly responsive in use, likely helped by the 120Hz refresh rate on offer.

When it comes to charging, the 120W charger included with the phone is about as fast as they come. With the phone’s optional ‘Fast charging’ setting enabled, it restored an impressive 70% of the phone’s battery – so basically a day’s worth – in just 15 minutes of charging, one of the fastest scores we’ve ever recorded. With a smaller sensor, it’s no match for the main camera in dimmer light, but colours and crispness are better than the ultrawide manages in other conditions, making it a happier substitute. And with a broader depth of field, it can cover for the main shooter when the bokeh isn’t quite right, lending a versatility to the whole setup.
Having used all the major Android releases over the course of 2023, it's clear that the X90 Pro can hold its own against the best Android phones. I like the direction Vivo is taking with the X series, and while earlier models focused a bit too much on the camera prowess to the detriment of other areas, that isn't the case on the X90 Pro — this is a well-rounded device that doesn't have any major shortcomings. The Dimensity 9200 doesn't quite hold its own in multi-core workloads, but a clear positive for MediaTek is that Arm's Immortalis-G715 clearly offers a similar level of power as the Adreno 740, and you'll notice the difference when gaming. Impressive camera setup The main 50.3MP snapper has a 1-inch sensor that allows for unparalleled performance in low-light conditions, as well as a 50MP 2x telephoto lens with OIS and a 12MP ultrawide ideal for capturing expansive scenes. This phone was always going to come down to its camera. The Vivo X80 Pro was 2022’s best camera, and it would take some doing for Vivo to exceed that – but it has. The X90 Pro’s main camera is the best around right now, bar none. The rest of the phone is pretty great too, but rivals edge it on performance, software experience, and camera versatility – so only buy this if the camera is your priority.

The X90 Pro also sees the introduction of MediaTek's Dimensity 9200 platform. I liked what MediaTek did last year with the Dimensity 9000 and was keen to take a look at this year's offering. With Qualcomm delivering one of its best chipsets in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, MediaTek had to nail the details to challenge Qualcomm in the high-end category. The Vivo X90 Pro is a powerful flagship by any measure, with perhaps the best phone camera you can buy outside of China – though it’s not without compromises. nits peak brightness isn’t bad, but again, you can find slightly better elsewhere such as on the Galaxy S23 Ultra if you often need to use your phone in bright, direct sunlight. You might be daunted at the idea of a MediaTek chipset if you’ve used budget or low-end mid-range phones in the past, but I’m here to dispel those worries. The chipset, combined with the 12GB of RAM on offer from the X90 Pro, delivers flagship-level performance both in terms of benchmarks and real-world use. Vivo has had a great few years with its flagship X range, and that trend is set to continue with the impressively capable Vivo X90 Pro.Accessibility of some certain features may vary across regions. The 256GB storage allowance is also generous, though it’s perhaps a shame that there’s no option to upgrade this further – or expand it with a microSD card. Images taken in daylight have excellent detail rendition and color accuracy, with no noise and great dynamic range throughout. The phone does a great job with foliage and inanimate objects, and it is on par with the best devices in this category. The wide-angle lens also does a great job in daylight scenarios, and thanks to autofocus, it doubles as a macro shooter. I prefer this system to dedicated macro modules, and the X90 Pro can dial in on subjects just 4cm away — I got a lot of detailed macro shots out of the device. The flagship range has always been known for its camera prowess and that’s been taken to the next level with the X90 Pro and a whopping 1-inch sensor that powers the main 50.3MP snapper. It’s a true game-changer, especially in low-light conditions, and it’s flanked by capable 50MP telephoto and 12MP ultra-wide lenses. Smaller tweaks are also needed, with rough translations in some places and the odd use of ALL CAPS in certain areas of the Settings menu that doesn’t look too polished, but these are relatively minor niggles.
