About this deal

For those who’ve not played the Undaunted series, here’s a brief overview of what you do on your turn: you play cards to send soldiers to their doom, repeatedly. That’s true, but everything is based on card play. During a turn, players draw four cards and determine one to use for initiative. Each card has an initiative value and whichever faction chooses the highest number goes first. The remaining three cards determine which units can perform a single-card action, flip from suppressed to ready, or hunker down (return to supply). The player with initiative plays all cards first, then the other player plays their cards. After this, the cycle continues with card draw and sacrificing one card to bid for initiative. The Soviet supply is looking rather healthy. This won’t last. You’re one of the few people who I don’t think would be dissuaded by the LONG but now coherent rulebook so I think I can recommend. I forfeited one scenario five minutes in. It was a decisive moment and the affective connection between myself and the game was absolute. This also highlights that scenario design is not always sterling. I’m impressed with the variety and care that is ever present throughout the campaign, but we did run into an occasional dud. It’s difficult to ascertain whether poor play led to such a lopsided outcome, but the structure of fresh scenarios with each session doesn’t allow for the sort of analysis that would come to a definite conclusion. Again, while the game wasn’t perfect in this regard, the overall design was strong enough that the blemishes were slight and easily forgiven. There are so many intelligent decisions and clever turns around every corner that Stalingrad makes it quite easy to embrace it charitably and overlook the small stuff.

Unlike other Legacy games, Undaunted: Stalingrad can be completely reset to the start allowing you to replay the campaign exploring its’ other branches. These soldiers are grouped by class into a combat unit that takes actions on the tiles of the playing area. Thus the 5 Riflemen are represented by the Rifleman combat counter. There are 3 soldiers in the Machine Gunners unit and the Scouts. When support units arrive such as Snipers and Engineers they will also have 3 members. These units are grouped into two identical squads: A and B. These are the same for both the Germans and the Soviets. (This seems to be more for play balance than historical accuracy). This continues as you fortify positions and ruin others. Every time we shattered a structure, we flipped the tile over and read the provided snippet of text that described the location and its importance. Losing Pavlov’s House was like losing a good friend.

Bella recensione, non ho capito però se è un gioco rigiocabile una volta finita la campagna, oppure no. Magari da diverse persone, non necessariamente gli stessi. una base di gioco solida, su cui è possibile innestare progressivamente nuove e svariate regole senza appesantire il tutto;

Similarly the 129 map tiles not only represent a massive 72 tile depiction of the streets centred on Pavlov’s house on the edge of 9 January Square but also how those same streets are changed by being fortified or by being reduced to rubble. Stalingrad, 1942 was a pivotal battle in WWII. For over five months the German forces tried to oust the Soviet Red Army in bitter fighting before finally capitulating after being cut off and surrounded. The consequences of the previous combat are then resolved. Depending on casualties taken up to 3 randomly-selected soldier cards will be removed. These are permamently removed from the campaign but do NOT rip them up! This is not a classic Legacy game but one that can be reset for further play. The cards have individual (fictitious) soldier names and these combatants are now gone. They are replaced, however, by Reserves. These new blood have their own identities but will have lesser abilities.
