About this deal

Chronomancer ( Orikan the Diviner) • Plasmancer • Psychomancer • Technomancer ( Illuminor Szeras) • Apprentek These guys come with an innate -1 to hit, they slap like the Skorpekh Destroyers, and they can deepstrike for free. What’s not to love? Plus, with a 10″ movement, they’ll be able to apply a decent amount of pressure by covering serious ground before making a charge roll. Psychomancer Protocol of the Vengeful Stars: Additional -1AP on 6s to wound when shooting OR ignore Light Cover within half range. Favoured by Mephrit, surprising no one who’s familiar with them.

Last out of the character toys, the four fancy flavours of Cryptek now have a list of 12 special wargear options that you can buy them with poi

You only get one shot but at S10 -4AP and 3D3 damage, it hits almost like a Castellan volcano lance. If you want to go for screen-killing, you can also throw on the enmitic exterminator for 3d3 S7 -1 AP shots. Just taking a complete shot in the dark on this one…but we feel like the gauss destructor is going to be wildly more popular. If you do take a squad of 2-3, it also says that any number can take whichever weapon (they can be mixed). Hexmark Destroyer Following in the theme of Necron units being led by characters and how that affects their output, we get to the Stratagems. The protocols that we were used to from the previous book, have all been turned into stratagems that do different interesting things that match their name – and pretty much all of them are good. They also all get better if a unit is lead by a Character (except for the Eternal Guardian), further reinforcing the detachment theme. The other pre-game upgrade option is Hand of the Phaeron. Replacing Phaeron’s WIll, for 2CP this upgrades one of your Overlords to be a PHAERON, and lets them use My Will Be Done twice a turn. While useful in some builds, the fact that MWBD is CORE only does mean this is far from and auto-take, especially with how juicy a lot of your other options are, but worth keeping in mind.

One is my homage to BSG. The other is a collection of Troops bits. All credit goes to others. The base images were all free on the web (either Thingiverse or MyMiniFactory or 3DCult) and all I can take credit for is cutting pieces I liked from one image and rescaling and adding them in an ascetically pleasing manner to another in MeshMixer. There are bits from about a dozen or more bashed into these STLs and if you see a piece that is yours and you want me to take it down, please say so.Once you have selected an eligible unit to declare a charge, you must select one or more enemy units within 12" of it as the targets of that charge. The targets of a charge do not need to be visible to the charging unit. Living Metal: Wounded models with this ability regain 1W in your command phase. All multi-wound units get this, again including Canoptek units like Wraiths and also, importantly, C’tan.

Overall, I am pleased about this change. While it hurts some units, most notably the large Destroyer squads that were staples of older builds, I’m reasonably convinced that the payoff in making the core 1W infantry much, much better is worth it, and it being rolled out for free to a bunch of Canoptek stuff is just gravy. Command Protocols Those are the ones I’ll be looking at with most interest as I try and figure out how to really optimise this effect. Record scratch: Before we begin we’d like to thank Games Workshop for providing us with a review copy of the Index for review purposes. Army Rule Most of these return from the previous edition, but quite a few get changed, some for the better, some for the worse. Necrons feel like they’re going to reward players who really get to know their army. There’s enough raw power and toughness here to be forgiving in early games, but a deep understanding of how best to use your forces is going to be needed to get the most out of them. The faction also has a lot of support for themed armies – powerful options are available that will reward going deep on either Canoptek constructs or Destroyer Cult units. This is also great news for existing Necron players – pretty much whatever set of tools you have access to, there will be a way to put them together that leverages the new book. The update is especially exciting if you favoured Warrior or Canoptek-based lists, both of which look vastly more interesting compared to 8th, where Immortals, Destroyers and vehicles were the main game in town – and on that note, let’s look at what the book covers. What’s in the Book?

Sample Lists

Repair Subroutines – Not needed now that all Canoptek have RP by default. The best kind of missing stratagem! Overall, with a random D6 shot output and only hitting on a 4+, you’ll most definitely want to bring more than one of these to get the most value out of your points. Definitely a sweet model though. We’re going to focus today on the content that’s relevant for matched play – our Crusade specialists will be bringing you their thoughts on the new rules for narrative campaigns next week. The Five Best Things About This Book This is one spot where the Necrons really shine at this point, as they are the premier “enemy” faction of 9th Edition–there are numerous “inexpensive” ways to start collecting your army that have significant cost savings and fill in important parts of most armies. If you have the option, it’s probably best to start collecting with a friend who is interested in some flavor of Space Marine because the starter sets come with Necrons and Space Marines (and simple playboard/terrain) and do a decent job of providing some introductory rules and examples for new players.
