About this deal

My initial thought was: No. Please, no. Some people were scared of heights, the dark, clowns, spiders, snakes… I never made fun of anyone when they were scared of things. But this horrible fear I had of speaking in front of a camera with a group of people watching had gotten me called a wimp at least a hundred times, mostly by my brother, but that still counts.

I listened all the way to the end because I liked Sal despite her too many references to “poop”; and I lived in hope the romance would actually start at some point. There were hints of Kulti's possessiveness at the 10.5 hour mark, but not much else. Disappointingly, I didn’t feel this story was romantic at all. I usually like sex in romances, but when sexy times happened here, they felt out of context because there had been no build-up of sexual tension or build up to love. We are TOLD they love one another, but I needed to be SHOWN during the plentiful 16 hours of opportunity. If there was heat, it happened in the last 2.5 hours, and at best I’d call it luke warm. her telling him she was stressed then him coming over later, doing face masks with her and massaging her feet? i have exited the planet. This is a tough book because it’s a fairly slow moving story and much of it is focused on the heroine’s struggle with her current position in life, but there is a romance in it and the ending of the story is very romantic. I absolutely loved this book. If you liked another book by Zapata called "The Wall of Winnipeg" you'll like this as well. I listened to the Audible version of this book and I thought that it was fabulous. I loved the humor and the wittiness of the heroine, Sal Casillas. Kulti was a real piece of work at times and I loved that Sal wasn't afraid to call him out on his assholery. (Yep! I'm making that a word.)This book also really brings home that what works for one reader might not work for another, too; I absolutely loved the first 7/8ths or so with the great immersion in Sal’s life, but was frustrated by the last part because some of the later revelations felt jarring (e.g., what was framed on his wall) and the sex felt somewhat obligatory. It also felt like some connections got dropped, particularly with Sal’s friends and coach; it makes me wonder if there will be a later book with Jenny or with Harlow (who reminds me a little of the Harlow from Christina Lauren’s series), either of which I’d want to read. It is good to understand from the get go that there is nothing physical going on until the end. Once you get there though, it's worth it. Personally I found the book so enjoyable, the characters interactions with each other so entertaining, that I did not miss the sex scenes that would usually be mixed throughout. Přečtení si této knihy jsem hodně dlouho odkládala a to jen proto že hlavním tématem je fotbal a ten teda není vůbec nic pro mě. Ale jsem ráda že jsem do ní nakonec pustila, protože já to miluju The character of Sal is fully realized. From the workouts, to the general aches and pains, to the on the field games, I really felt I was there in the moment. I also appreciated the insight into what it means to be a pro soccer player in the US. Sal has only one endorsement. She works part time as a landscaper to help supplement her income. She plays professional soccer and devotes her life to it because it’s her passion, not because it is making her rich.

When you are trying to use the athlete hero trope in your novel, you should ensure that you are getting the basics about the sport correct. Before writing this novel, the author should have done more research about soccer (football). She got some of the basic rules in the game wrong, which will irritate the Soccer fans reading this novel. Miluju tenhle příběh! Moc mě bavilo prostředí, ve kterém se kniha odehrávala. Na fotbal jsem nikdy moc nebyla, ale nakonec jsem byla příjemně překvapená. Příběh mě bavil okamžitě. I'm not going to lie. I was struggling in the beginning until I reached the 30% mark and then finally, finally the story caught my interested.

Thanks for the review! I wouldn’t have found this book otherwise, and stories where one can really feel the characters’ professions/callings (as Cait describes above) are my catnip.

Hodnotenia

The age difference wasn’t really a problem for me- she is 27 and who cares if she’s with someone 13 years older than her. If she was 18, I would have had a problem with it, but a 27 year old women can do what she wants. You know your reputation is just what everyone else thinks of you, your character is what you really are.” Some things in Mariana Zapata’s books give me mixed feelings and I had some in here too, but not as much as in from lukov so I’m happy about that! I also don’t know how to explain it, so I’m not going to go into dept. Also, it isn’t only about how poorly treated Sal is here, but it is also about what fame has to bring to someone like Kulti. It is not pretty either. There is more of this book than its sports-related topic and the fact that it was supposed to be some romantic little story happening there. There are some issues exposed that some might not know of or care about. But on some level, I do.
