About this deal

Entertaining Strangers went on to be performed at the National Theatre with Dame Judi Dench and Tim Pigott-Smith playing key roles. Up here on the International Space Station I don’t get affected by the seasons but on Earth the seasons are always changing: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

This book compiles two of the author's earliest works, otherwise out of print in their original editions. The line around which something spins is called an axis. The Earth's axis is tilted at an angle. The Earth’s tilt is the reason for the changing seasons. Our daughter, Annie, was born exactly two weeks after moving into the house. Although my strange attraction to our new home never faded and questions remained unanswered, I pushed them aside and threw myself into my new role as mother. Meanwhile, the northern hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun. The light and heat from the Sun is less direct, and it is spread over a wider area so it brings less warmth. The tilt means that nights are longer, days are shorter. This is winter in the northern hemisphere. Now, you can revisit the beginning of her signature style in two of her earliest novels—completely revised and together in one volume for the first time. DCPA launched Spinning the Moon, Dorchester's record-breaking seventh community play – no other town has achieved this many – in October 2019 with a public play reading, workshops and casting.

Time and again, New York Times bestselling author Karen White has proven herself to be the “ultimate voice of women’s fiction.”* Now, the Moon is the biggest influence on Earth’s tides because of its proximity ― but it isn’t the only influence. The Sun ― with about 27 million times the mass of the Moon ― is always the gorilla in the room when it comes to solar system equations. But it’s a distant gorilla, about 390 times farther away than the Moon, which gives it a little less than half of the Moon’s tide-generating force. Yet it still plays a role. However, it is Earth that sets the speed of the moon's rotation. The moon completes one revolution in about 27 days — nearly the same time it takes for the moon to orbit Earth: 27.32 days. As a result, people on Earth only ever see one side of the moon. If a moon day were any longer or shorter, we would be able to see all of the moon's surface as the moon orbited Earth. The play is being staged by Dorchester Community Plays Association who would like to thank everyone for their help, support and vital sponsorship that has made the play possible. We sat next to each other, leaning against a scrubby tree trunk, and drank our water in companionable silence while waiting for night to fall completely. A soft snore came from Annie, and the rhythm of it lulled us both to a semiconscious stupor. Michael’s head sagged forward and I reached my hand up to wake him, only to find myself seemingly paralyzed. I willed my limb to move, but it lay limp and useless at my side. I struggled to keep my eyes open, but an unseen force seemed to be dragging me into a deep, dark slumber. I made an attempt to wiggle my toes, recalling how doing that had brought me out of bad dreams when I was a girl. Nothing moved; I was completely immobile. The last thing I remembered was reaching for Annie. I loved the first fiction story about time travel and how it can be related to history with ties to certain events. White does an excellent job creating linking them together in a believable way. As well as the launch on Saturday, there is a workshop for beginners on Sunday, November 3 at Dorchester Corn Exchange between 2-4pm, and the casting weekend will run from Friday November 29 to Saturday, December 1.

Can you easily predict the tides by following the path of the Moon? Not really! First of all, because the Moon is orbiting in the same direction as the Earth rotates, it takes extra time for any point on our planet to rotate and end up exactly below the Moon. The extra time is ~50 mins. This means that the high tide bulges are never directly lined up with the Moon, but a little ahead of it. Scientists believe that the Moon formed early in the solar system’s history after Earth and an object about the size of Mars smashed into each other. The impact sent chunks of Earth and the impactor into space that were pulled together by gravity, creating the Moon. Reading Karen White’s first two novels I was hooked by the time-travel theme of the first novel, In the Shadow of the Moon, and the Gothic overtones of the second novel, Whisper of Goodbye. The settings are the American Civil War and the Reconstruction of Louisiana which, of course, took place after the end of the Civil War, respectively. The author devised some differing aspects of time-travel that I had not seen before such as the ‘Shadow Warriors’. I truly enjoyed the Native American influences found in the first novel through the character of Zeke Proundfoot. As both novels take place in the South, the reader definitely experiences the deprivation of the South by the North. The second novel has a sister who has lost everything and everybody whom she loved going to visit her older sister who had married a Yankee officer and lives on their granmother’s plantation. What Cat finds brings remembrances, some welcomed, but many not, but where is Elizabeth, her older sister? This is an incredible bunch of people to work with. It is a full-on rehearsal schedule and there is no let-up but everyone puts their heart and soul into every minute and works so hard, I am so impressed.” At this point in the orbit, the Earth’s tilt means that the southern hemisphere is facing more towards the Sun. This means that the light and heat from the Sun is more direct and stronger. The days are the longest in the year and the nights, the shortest. This is summer in the southern hemisphere.Another theory is the co-formation theory, in which the moon was created at the same time as Earth. In this hypothesis, two massive objects five times the size of Mars crashed into each other. Earth and its moon then condensed out of the clouds of matter that resulted from the collision, NASA reported.
