About this deal

A continuance of the heightened health awareness among consumers has shone a light on low- and no-alcohol drinks. Rye Whiskey: Made in the U.S. this style of whiskey must contain 51% rye grain, and can be blended with other grains like corn or malted barley. It’s characteristically spicy, with flavors like anise or clove. Most of them, like Seedlip, have carried a hefty price tag. Creating a distilled beverage of this nature and getting it to market is not a cheap pursuit.

Ritual Zero Proof– Ritual Zero Proof makes a few non-alcoholic spirit options, which have proven to make lots of delicious alternative beverages. So don’t expect to try any of these and think they will taste like whiskey if you just had whiskey yesterday. While I have tried to find the best options of non-alcoholic whiskey currently available for you, I am still not very impressed with non-alcoholic whiskey as a whole. To make the honey water: combine 100g acacia honey with 50ml warm water. Make sure mix is cool before use. How it’s made can help inform whether or not it’s a quality non-alcoholic spirit or if the brand is serious about crafting a quality product. While beers and some wine alternatives have had a small foothold in the market for a number of years now – and based on the Heineken 0.0 I tried at the Mindful Drinking festival, progress is definitely being made in terms of flavour – there’s a new trend emerging for something much less likely. Non-alcoholic spirits sound like the definition of a pointless exercise, yet in 2015, Ben Branson launched Seedlip, a distilled non-alcoholic spirit, the world’s first, a spectacularly fragrant drink that combines botanicals and can be used in place of gin, for example, and mixed with tonic water. He placed the first batch of 1,000 bottles in Selfridges, and it sold out in three weeks. The second took three days to shift. The third sold out in 30 minutes. Now you can buy it in selected supermarkets and it appears on the drinks menus of upmarket restaurants and bars around the world. New contenders in this field of drinks spring up almost weekly as the bandwagon rolls on creaking under the weight of those jumping onboard. Combine the strawberries and sugar in a sealable container, and leave in the fridge overnight to infuse. Blend the strawberry sugar mix with Verjus then strain through a muslin cloth. Store syrup in the fridge. Honey spiced “lemonai de”

Brian Miller founded Seir Hill in a barn in Wilton, Connecticut, and his passion for non-alcoholic spirits is rooted in his decision to stop drinking for a healthier lifestyle. He opted for NA options, but they were never close to the real thing. So he decided to make one himself.Malt Whiskey: Made from malted barley, this style changes based on country of origin. Malt in Scotland is 100% malted barley, but malted barley in the U.S. only has to have 51% malted barley, and can be blended with other grains. The malting process is interesting: you soak barley and spread it across the floor, allowing it to start the germination process before you begin the mash. It can be smoky, nutty, or even chocolatey. After evaluating these four alcohol free whiskeys, hopefully your choice is a little clearer. Overall, non-alcoholic whiskey is not my favorite option in the world of alcohol free beverages. Alcoholic whiskey is “hot.” It’s a difficult spirit to mimic. Before we dive into the comparison, let’s take a look at the real deal. There are many different types of whiskey, but it is essentially this, as described by Wikipedia: “a distilled alcoholic beverage made from fermented grain mash….typically aged in wooden casks, generally made of charred white oak.” No two whiskeys are alike, because each distillery has their own unique spin on the craft.

Add the Seedlip, honey water and lemon juice to a highball glass and fill with cubed ice. Top with the soda water, stir gently to combine and serve. A lot goes into crafting a bottle of whiskey: malting, mashing, fermentation, distillation, and aging. Depending on the grain used, country of origin, or type of whiskey being made, the process might slightly differ. Whiskey Advocate has a great explanation if you want to dive deeper on the subject. Lyre’s is an Australian beverage company offering “crafted homages to the intensity, balance, and beauty of the time-tested classics.” The name was inspired by the Australian Lyrebird, the world’s greatest mimic. I have found their White Cane Spirit to be an excellent rum substitute, so hopes are high for Lyre’s American Malt.Whissin Non-Alcoholic Drink is produced by Industrias Espadafor, a company based in Granada, Spain. For four generations, the company has been producing non-alcoholic beverages after originally focusing on local wine and soft drinks. The name Whissin is a mashup of whiskey and sin, meaning “without” in Spanish. The bottle has a no-nonsense design, like something you would find alongside inexpensive mixers at your local corner store.

Another method involves distilling a neutral grain spirit, then distilling again to remove the alcohol. The mixture is then blended with flavorings and essences to create the final product. nAs for taste, to be frank, imitating the taste and sensation of a whisky, which contains 40% alcohol, is difficult. WHISSIN does, however, promise to offer a unique bouquet of flavors that is reminiscent of whisky. Drink this slightly sweet, Whisky alternative neat or with ice and mixers. For those craving the burning sensation associated with whisky, add a splash or two of Rochester Ginger. Humphreys says that many of their customers are people who just don’t want to drink all the time, rather than those who abstain completely, but it’s in the world of spirits that she’s noticed the biggest change. “There have been non-alcoholic spirit alternatives available before, but over the last two years there’s been more demand. More people are going into the development side of non-alcoholic spirits, too.”After reviewing these four non-alcoholic spirits, each is made differently, but none go through the exact same extensive process that one would take to craft whiskey. However, Spiritless 74 is the closest, as they distill a neutral grain spirit then reverse distill to remove the alcohol, then follow that with a blending. More detail is included under each product below for how it is made. COMMON STYLES OF WHISKEY The problem with non-alcoholic versions of drinks that are typically alcoholic by nature is that, historically, they have been foul. While low- or no-alcohol beers are making progress as more brands launch their own lines, many wine substitutes still tend to taste like sour Ribena or days-old Appletiser. Spirits, which are much more potent and rely more on what the experts call “structure”, have to stand up in terms of flavour. Zoe Burgess, head of research and development at the bartender collective Drink Factory and co-owner of the Dalston bar Untitled, agreed to test out some non-alcoholic spirit samples to see what she could do with them.
