Now it's not very nice to use little girls as live bait to catch monsters, but, if you do ever have to, then it's always best to use an annoying little sprog like Ella, just in case they do actually end up getting snatched. In my review of The Christmasaurus, I asked Tom to give us more girl heroes, and my goodness did he deliver! Lucy is sensible and responsible and brave and clever and daring and kind! She is a true leader and I couldn't ask for more in the main character. I loved her friends too. Norman is eccentric, skilful and sweet and I was pleased to see a girl of colour in Ella, the sassiest six-year-old you will ever meet! Although, I would have liked her to play more of a key role than just the annoying younger one that always tags along. I was thrilled by the cameo from William and Brenda, but I wanted to hear more from them and maybe even Bob and Pamela too. However the compelling fitness of theme and event and the apt but unexpected imagery (the opening sentences compare the first week in August when this takes place to "the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning") help to justify the extravagant early assertion that had the secret about to be revealed been known at the time of the action, the very earth "would have trembled on its axis like a beetle on a pin."Lucy is responsible and all of the children look to her for support when the grown-ups disappear. What does it mean to be responsible? What are you responsible for? How do our responsibilities change as we get older? The adventure element is so much fun. Lucy is the perfect main character: she’s strong, feisty and confident, but not annoyingly so. She’s still unsure of her abilities, but she learns by the end just how much she’s really capable of. Just a warning to some younger children who might want to read The Creakers – there are some scary bits. But don’t worry – Lucy is here to save the day! Last Christmas, I read Tom Fletcher’s first novel, The Christmasaurus. I absolutely fell in love with it and I can’t wait until December comes around so I can read it again! I think I’ll make it a Christmas staple, like an advent calendar or The Polar Express. Anyway, I digress. The fact that I loved The Christmasaurus so much meant that I had such high expectations for The Creakers. I wasn’t left disappointed!
