About this deal

While there is some debate about whether it is technically a Speyside or a Highland malt, everyone can agree that it does rank as an exceptionally well-made single malt scotch. What is Single Malt Scotch? Nose with Water: Definitely opened up, strong brine notes, a bit of toasty brioche, floral notes like heather and a bit of wood spice like vanilla While the governmental regulations on scotch production mean that there can’t be too much variation in production, there are a few key elements within every distillery that sets them apart from everyone else. Dalwhinnie is no exception. Wooden Worm Tubes During the 1960's and 70's most distilleries replaced their worms with shell-and-tube condensers, since they were cheaper to install and easier to maintain – I can think of only sixteen distilleries today which have worm tubs – and also because they produced a lighter, purer style of spirit, more popular with blenders. In 1986, the worm tubs at Dalwhinnie were replaced by condensers. The spirit lost all its personality, and at considerable expense the worm tubs were restored in 1995.

The Dalwhinnie 15 has an ABV of 43% which is a little higher than some scotches. So you may notice a bit of a harsh burn. So does frozen whisky make me rethink the habits of a lifetime? No. Is it an enjoyable way of drinking whisky? Yes, it’s OK. Like freezing grain whisky, it brings out the creaminess. Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. If your question is, should I try it? My answer is unequivocal yes. Yes, drink Dalwhinnie 15. If you are a fan of Highland or Speyside scotches, Dalwhinnie is going to rank up in one of your absolute favorites. It’s the perfect bridge between the two and full of light fruit and honey character with classic heather and just a hint of peat. We may sell, license, transfer, assign or in any other way dispose of the Service (including Members) to any third party without any notification to you, e.g. (but without limitation) in connection with any reorganization, restructuring, merger or sale, or other transfer of assets.

It is true that legally no one else is allowed to use this water, so we’ll never be able to compare!) What does the 15 mean? Dalwhinnie lies within two of the most prominent scotch-producing regions of the world: Highland and Speyside. With light and fruity Speyside on one side and elegant Highland on the other, Dalwhinnie 15 is created with the best of both worlds. It’s a single malt scotch that is just as comfortable in a scotch-lovers’s bar as in a beginner’s first glass. General Dalwhinnie 15 Information: By the early 1990s Dalwhinnie 15 was making headlines winning whisky competitions worldwide, including its most recent Gold win at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2016. What sets Dalwhinnie apart? First, the barley is harvested, allowed to germinate and sprout, then toasted overheat. This process is called malting. Disputes that cannot be settled over multiple drams of whisky shall be solely submitted to the court of Amsterdam, The Netherlands unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise.Keep in mind Dalwhinnie’s lighter profile when pairing food. What if you treat it like any other malt and don’t put it in the freezer at all? At room temperature, the Dalwhinnie looks, smells and tastes; like Dalwhinnie. The nose is light and nutty with a distinct nut-toffee edge and just a whiff of wood smoke. The palate is light, fresh and honeyed, with a nice cut of citrus running through. A good Dalwhinnie that would make a really good aperitif dram. If you have an alcohol with a higher ABV, it’s often wise to add about 2-4 drops of water to your glass. Yes, this dilutes it, but not noticeably. Desserts: Dalwhinnie is exceptional at dessert pairings. Try creamy desserts like creme brulee, butter desserts like shortbread, caramel desserts like bread pudding, or fruit desserts like poached pears. Final Recommendation on Dalwhinnie 15 Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”).Straight out of the freezer, does Winter’s Gold ‘ amplify the rich, heather, honeyed flavours that the distillery is famed for‘? Sort of, but… In the glass it’s very syrupy; oozing rather than flowing. The nose is unsurprisingly quiet, crème brûlée and peaches, but really soft. The palate however is a bit more interesting. I’m getting plenty of creamy heather and honey, along with a bit of waxy, sappy oak and lemon, with just a hint on menthol at the finish.

Meats: Light, delicate fish. Dalwhinnie pairs exceptionally well with buttery fish like scallops, lobster or crab. And the harsh burn can pair well with creamier dishes like seafood alfredo or carbonara. While you may be somewhat skeptical at the romantic language they use to describe this flowing water, you actually can taste very faint hints of peat and smoke for a deeper flavor. So, I’m rather inclined to believe them and appreciate the subtle effects the Lochan an Doire-Uaine and its peaty surroundings may have! Vegetables: Summer vegetables like zucchini or winter vegetables like winter squashes both pair well with Dalwhinnie Whatever your palate preference, it’s worth it to give Dalwhinnie 15 a shot. If for no other reason than to say you’ve tried one of the 6 Classic Malts of Scotland! Recommended Reads:Dalwhinnie distillery is situated very high above sea level in the Grampian mountains in Highland region, very near to the geographical center of Scotland as well. That is why it’s one of the highest distilleries in Scotland, having some marine quality in its whiskies. Winter’s Gold is what I call a marketer’s whisky. It gets its name from the fact that it contains only whisky distilled between October and April, during the cold Scottish winters months. Dalwhinnie suggests you serve this dram straight from the freezer, in a chilled glass, just like Snow Grouse by the Famous Grouse brand. I call this the marketing talk to sell more of this whisky. This malted barley is then ground into grist and added to warm liquid to create “mash” and begin breaking down sugars. The finished product is called “wort.” Fermenting and Distillation
