There are multiple asymmetric sub-dials: the one at 3 o’clock shows the day of the week, mode setting, or tidal information depending on the model. I owned like four frogmans, the GW7900, the GW5000, and a variety of random G shocks during my highschool and college. I’m not going to pretend that it fits under a shirt cuff, but it certainly doesn’t feel as chunky as those numbers would lead one to believe.

Back over on the front, a sturdy, slightly domed sapphire crystal protects the very data-heavy, intricate analogue dial. The Super Illuminator function lights up the watch face with high-intensity light, to ensure readability in the dark. The most interesting thing I find about the dial is that the little insert that says 'tide graph/moon phase' has some granite like texture. To this day, the MR-G line is where you will find the latest and greatest in material sciences, metallurgy and technology under the G-SHOCK banner.

While a fully analog display might sound slightly cumbersome for a feature-packed dive watch, Casio’s Frogman models offer a number of tricks to facilitate their operation while underwater. The dial is protected by a clear sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment, while the reverse side of the watch is fitted with a threaded screw-down caseback that features another sapphire crystal that has been finished bright blue with a vapor deposition process and engraved with the Frogman collection’s logo. The GW-8230B includes Tough Solar charging and a high-brightness LED backlight, all the while maintaining the original model’s form and size.
