About this deal

A huge thank you to Sourcebooks Landmark and Cate Quinn for sending me a free copy in exchange for an honest review. I liked Rachel and Emily, but Tina's character seemed somewhat out of Blake's lane and just didn't fit, which lost me a bit. Jason had scorned her, lied to her, behaved too badly for him to be left alive, forcing her to kill… again. Anyways, I'll be the first to admit this isn't a literary masterpiece and there's some swiss cheese plot hole moments. Brookmyre builds layers of intrigue like a chef crafting a multilayer cake, with each layer providing another tantalizing clue or red herring to keep readers guessing.

Turns out, my reading list just needed a dose of Brookmyre's gritty, gripping writing to ease this fatigue. Growing up after the war in the East End of London, Linda falls in with local gangsters including the Krays, Freddie Foreman and Ronnie Cook. This book started out strong – quite the page-turner at first so that I wanted to plop down on the couch and do nothing else but read for the rest of the day.Overall: a slow burner suspense novel, readers will be stumped working out who killed Blake while being enthralled with the idea of a polygamous marriage. Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. What I thought the author did particularly well was to give them each a very distinctive ‘voice’ which came across as very authentic.

E nonostante il loro passato un po' travagliato, Cate Quinn è molto brava a farle empatizzare con il lettore. If you loved the movie Ready or Not or Jessica Knoll’s psychological thriller Luckiest Girl Alive, you’ll love Catherine Steadman’s THE FAMILY GAME. The characters are very good, they’re all well developed and you see their individual personalities very clearly. Through the course of the book, we learn more about each wife, her relationships with the other wives and her relationship with Blake.I'm sure the story would have got a bit more interesting as it went on, but it was very 'samey', and I am afraid to say, read quite poorly, with pauses in the narrative which spoiled the flow of the story. There's absolutely nothing wrong with light suspense novels, I simply have felt frustrated by marketing campaigns which try to portray less-than-shocking thrillers as exactly that. Ranked from Christmas level 1 - 5 (with Level 1 being Christmas in the background of the story, and Level 5 being a full-on, 100% Christmas-y plot! But it is also a thoughtful journey into the new heart of darkness that will haunt readers long after they have turned the final page. If you’ve been around Crime by the Book for a little bit, you already know how much I absolutely love Iceland Noir: a crime fiction festival that takes place in Reykjavik, Iceland in November.
