About this deal

Krumiri are a kind of biscuit which is regarded as the particular delicacy of Casale Monferrato, the city in north-west Italy where they were invented in 1878 by the confectioner Domenico Rossi.

The only thing that softens the mixture are eggs and butter, giving Krumiri their special irresistible fragrance. Whether they’re sweet and bubbly or robust and fortified, the important thing is that they are noble wines.Squeeze ridged tubes at least 2”-3” long directly onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, then bend them slightly into the traditional shape. Even more artfully, when all the dough has been used up, form the 'canelli' into half moon shapes 'appena accennata'. The location was the Oval Lingotto exhibition center in the city during Gourmet Expoforum, the largest area ever to accommodate the competition with its 1300 seating capacity. The second theory leads us back to Casale Monferrato’s Jewish tradition — the Yiddish word ‘ krumm’ means crooked in English. Their flavours are quite different, but both are the fruit of old traditions from two distant places.

The Krumiri recipe has never changed: the same ingredients as always, the same proportions as always. Turin is filled with a mixture of 16 th and 18 th century renaissance, baroque and neo classical architecture. With their iconic semicircular shape, the Classic Krumiri have never changed their recipe, keeping the same ingredients and proportions to preserve the tradition of Bistefani. These fine biscuits are exquisite eaten on their own while also constituting the perfect accompaniment to beverages and soft-serve desserts. Many say they were named after a popular liqueur of the time, but another more than possible explanation derives from a news report of the period.

Barolo and Barbaresco red wines are made from the Nebbiolo grape, and the sparkling Asti Spumante comes from the Moscato grape. In the Twenties, Angelo Ariotti took over Domenico Rossi’s business and, with it, the recipe and the Krumiro patent, so the biscuit could continue its grand tradition through history, the same as it always was. Casale Monferrato is mostly famous in the rest of Italy for two reasons, one of which is unfortunately a sad history related to an asbestos factory, "Eternit". Because that’s what Krumiri like: they love high-class company and can only be paired with flavours that produce sublime sensations. Day by day, their pastries became the most beloved in town, thanks to their secret: use only the highest quality ingredients, from a well-maintained mother yeast to IGP hazelnuts from Piemonte to fresh cage-free eggs.

It’s a match made in heaven, perhaps because some of Italy’s best grapes grow on the Monferrato hills not far from where Krumiri are made. Our Piemonte travel articles will take you from Lake Maggiore to Alba, Asti, Bra and Barolo before continuing to Turin and then east along the Po Valley. Many Italians start the day with filled pastries, biscuits, even chocolate pralines are enjoyed with a quick espresso. The following years also saw royal approval with the company permitted to display the seals of the Duchy of Aosta, Genova and King Umberto I on each packet. Italy had been a unified country for only a few years and the repercussions of the Risorgimento could still be felt.
