About this deal

Film photographers looking for a compact camera should look elsewhere – point and shoots from the late ’90s and 2000s were much smaller and, frankly, better. For clarity's sake, photos must be taken with a Canon 35mm film point and shoot of the Sure Shot series; this additionally includes the Prima and Autoboy series in Europe and Asia, but does not include ANY digital camera, nor ANY other Canon camera.

The Sure Shot/Autoboy series are the only point and shoot cameras by Canon that featured a 38mm f/2. If focus has been achieved in close-focus mode (closer than one meter), the green light flashes slowly and the user knows to frame their picture with the parallax-corrected frame-lines in the VF. What “very good” means can be completely different to what it means when shooting a fancy camera with an expensive lens. The big finder allows for fast aim, no need to lose time aligning your visual axis with a squinty VF that tends to black out at suboptimal viewing angles. With all the quirks and pros of a disposable camera and the sharpness of a 35mm SLR, it doesn't get more user-friendly or fun than this!

You set the flash to off, turn the camera off, and when you turn it back on, the flash is still off!

It misses no more often than any other point and shoot film camera from the ’80s or ’90s, and in fact it hits more frequently than most.

As it uses two cheap AA batteries, it is easy for sellers to dry-test the camera, so there is very little risk (if any) of getting a dead camera. The power necessary for the exposure system and film advance and rewind is provided by two plain alkaline AA batteries. Past 90mm, that sharpness fades, but up to that point, you would need to be an experienced pixel peeper to notice the difference between this and an SLR with a good quality zoom lens. And unlike so many of the cameras of the point and shoot class, the XL won’t fit into a pocket or seemingly disappear when not in use. There are some limitations exposure-wise, but using the right negative film under the right lighting conditions can easily overcome them, letting the photographer enjoy a film compact which is great fun to use but can also deliver great results. There was only film around then and I just wanted something pocketable rather than take a T90 plus lenses or an EOS1 plus a different set of lenses. Prime lenses, on the other hand, are formulated and optimized to provide the best image quality and the fastest aperture at their single specific focal length. When this happens in the camera’s normal operating distance of one meter to infinity, the green light illuminates solid.

I think the Canon Sure Shot Supreme is a great camera to take on trips and travelling as it is quite compact and the results are reliable. The Zoom XL occupies a special place in my heart with it’s brutalist-cyberpunk design, and it just about fits in the inside pocket of my leather jacket. It is compact but not uncomfortably so, and the brick-like shape with the matte finish and the small ridge on the front provide a really steady grip. in daylight, but I have a couple of cameras already loaded with film and my shooting pace has dropped significantly lately. Ultimately I decided to sell the Canon and keep the Minolta as the 27mm lens was more unusual than the Canon's 35mm (you know how many 35mm lensed compacts I have!

It’s not going to be the most impressive film camera you’ll ever own as far as image quality or advanced features goes, but that wouldn’t be why you bought one. The camera sets your shutter speed and exposure via the light meter on the front, so making sure the flash doesn’t fire is really the only thing to keep an eye on when shooting. That’s how the Sure Shot AF-7 viewfinder works, the same way as on countless other basic film cameras. Build quality is very good and the feel and chunky size of the camera leave no doubt in my mind it will work for a long time.
