While moisturiser can absolutely make skin feel softer in general, the ingredients used in aftershave balms are more considered towards the vulnerable state that skin is left in after a shave.

It is however the balmy and creamy sandalwood from New Caledonia, paired with Virgina cedrawood and Dreamwood (a high-tech synthetic note) in its base, that gives this fragrance its defining and lingering signature. This product has a lower concentration of perfume oils, around 5%. It usually lasts three or four hours and can be reapplied if necessary, but won't deliver the same effects of an eau de parfum or eau de toilette. Its latest collection of fragrances, I Giardini Medicei, pays tribute to the olfactory gardens of the Medici dynasty and rediscovers the Florentine brand’s botanical roots. Composed by Gian Luca Perris, Officina’s maître perfumer, our favourite from the collection of four perfumes is Bizzarria; described as an ode to singularity. Intriguing from the offset, it is inspired by gardens at the Villa Medicea di Castello, where in the 16th century the Medici family started to cultivate citrus fruits and were amongst the earliest to grow lemons, oranges and bergamot. The scent opens with a big, bold ‘Bizzarria’ accord of bitter orange, lemon and etrog (a citrus fruit rarely used in perfumery), seasoned with timur pepper and the unmistakable sweetness of neroli. Heart notes of orange blossom absolute, davana and ginger add to its spirited character before taking its foot off the pedal on a base of cedar-wood and musk.
