Despite a somewhat slow pace, the focus on friendship, love, career, and much more, makes this an entertaining read. I'll be honest and that say this didn't pack quite the emotional punch I was expecting, but I did think it was really cute and I appreciated a lot of the elements, especially the grumpy/sunshine dynamic I wasn't expecting. Just as Georgie makes this decision, she's surprised by a new development: it turns out that Levi Fanning – once a troublemaking, angry kid who became infamous in the town, and now a quiet, grumpy dock construction worker with a face carefully carved by God – has been promised by her parents that he could stay in their house for the next two weeks. We get both Georgie’s and Levi’s voices, as they wrestle with the events of their pasts affecting their present and future choices, and a wonderful supporting cast including Hank, whose contribution to the story should not be overlooked. And I think that's exactly what Kate Clayborn does with Georgie and Levi: rather than trying to make them belong in genre-hero-and-heroine boxes, she uses recognizable codes of "romance novel depictions of masculinity/femininity" to create characters, but also deconstruct where those codes are coming from.

Georgie's plans hit a snag when she comes face to face with an unexpected roommate--Levi Fanning, onetime town troublemaker and current town hermit. Funny and relatable, I appreciate that this book skips over all the recycled romance tropes in favor of telling an honest story about life and how beautifully imperfect it is. The pair are very different in many ways yet similar in others and this is a great story of personal discovery and moving on. She also cheerfully announces that Georgie has now time to do the “things she’d always wanted to do”. It’s no different from what millions of people do, good people who are in pain or unsure of where to turn; good people who need a break from everything in this world that’s hard and sad and unforgiving.The “big reveal” about the “blankness” Georgie feels was another major let-down; the explanation of it all is so ridiculously simple that only our 28-year-old going on 13 could come up with it. This was a sweet and sometimes funny story about the life of Georgie, and how not everyone grows up knowing exactly what they want to be when they grow up and what direction their adult life with take them. It made me feel about a million years old but then I asked my 20-year old sister if it’s like cool term I’m unaware of and she said it was “cringey”.In the realistic and insightful romance novel Georgie, All Along , two people reinvent themselves--and ignite heat in the process.
