Partially as a palate cleanser after the megathon that was Dragonbone Chair and partially because I found it quite engaging. It’s a good thing I hadn’t read this book first, for I would have found that the story I wanted already had been written. It’s the first tragedy in what turns out to be blow after calamitous blow for Beth and her fellow survivors including Bryce and Richard – who helped Ed on his mission in Running Club and managed to get aboard the ship when Ed didn’t. This story left me thinking hard about my emergency bag requirements, and with the thought that maybe I should try a little gentle jogging now and then, just in case.

She’s reluctant to consider he might have changed and that says more about Beth than it does her husband. Grabbing the only shelter he could think of he secreted his family (he, wife and their two children) away into their cellar while asteroids worked their horrors.

There’s absolutely nothing Beth wouldn’t do for Alice and Arthur; she would walk through fire, take a thousand bullets, and in the case of this story, she’ll journey to the end of the earth to find them. Of course, the extremes of human behaviour are exhibited: the group do their best to maintain decency, but there are those whose focus on their own survival leads them just one tiny step short of cannibalism. I'm not saying it's impossible, but there were quite a number of survivors (Gloria and Jenny Rae, for two) that couldn't remember the word "asteroids," were admittedly pretty uneducated and operating at a more primeval and ruthless level of being, yet were not only surviving, but were surviving rather successfully and suspiciously intelligently! Despite the mist’s cocoon and the untroubled sea and our quiet voices, my insides were shifting like molten lava, and my stomach heaved with that same repeated reality: I had been separated from my children, and the best I could hope for was that it was only by a mere ocean.

His second novel, The End of the World Running Club, is a post-apocalyptic running fable about hope, love and endurance. By chance you realize this in time, take your wife and two kids into the cellar, grab some food and water, and survive. Cue fiery asteroids from outer space decimating the UK and elsewhere, enforcing upon him some kind of actual responsibility. The fierceness and fearlessness that courses through Beth as she chases after the woman that stole her children is akin to a lioness protecting her cubs.
