About this deal

xv + 194pp, softcover with photograph featuring Laurie Lee holding a clipboard and smoking, very good condition, Penguin Books/Penguin Classics, 2004. After his new line of work, acting as a guide to British tourists, is curtailed by local guides, he meets a young German who gives him a violin. New and familiar characters abound, voiced by a bright mix of performers, including Kat Dennings, Regé-Jean Page, Emma Corrin, Michael Sheen, Kristen Schaal, Brian Cox, John Lithgow, Jeffrey Wright, and so many more, including fan-favorite narrators Simon Vance and Ray Porter. Lee walked pretty much everywhere in Britain and in Spain, mainly on back roads and there are lots of descriptions of small, poor Spanish villages.

Lee depicts himself as moving penniless through the landscape, earning his keep by playing his violin, but I read afterward in an article about him that a woman (unacknowledged) paid his way—so these cringey moments were no accident. Never having seen the sea, he walked to Southampton, and then walked onto London to meet his girlfriend and work as a labourer for a year before going onto Spain where he walked the length of the country.Since this was during the years of economic depression, there were also many men on the road looking for work.

The audiobook reflects Rhonda’s own journey and shares the most direct way out for those experiencing hardship and the path to end pain and suffering endured by so many, and it shines a light on a future without anxiety or fear. Then as the sun went down it seemed to drag the whole sky with it like the shreds of a burning curtain, leaving rags of bright water that went on smoking and smouldering along the estuaries and around the many islands.illustrations by Leonard Rosoman; Map; Hardback: lemon-yellow cloth decorated in gilt on spine; Some signs of use, cloth a little dirtied, previous owner's inscription to front free end-paper, vg-. When we got to the place where Lee comes back to his lodging to find his hostess screaming and crying that her drunken husband has gone after her daughter, and Lee promptly offers succor to . Our neighbours are all farmers, scratching a subsistence living from harvesting olives, wheat, sunflowers, raising pigs and horses and puppies, and labouring in the fields, they are generous with their smiles and their vegetables.

Following a loose plan of walking around the coast of Spain takes him to Andalusia, Málaga and a brief sojourn into the British territory of Gibraltar. So I cut the last cord and changed my shillings for pesetas, bought some bread and fruit, left the seaport behind me and headed straight for the open country.I wish I could have believed his depiction of Spain on the brink of war with Generalissimo Franco’s fascists. The cover illustration on my copy, by Pauline Ellison, is flooded with fresh spring green, just like the valley I look out on today on this chilly Spring day. For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare--poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. Lee meets up with various people who he finds something in common with, settling for a week or two, or moving on within days. It is not uncommon on a country road to see a small white van parked in the shade and one man with a mattock, hoeing in a large field of weeds.
